Random Fun

I have nothing to blog today. Unlike the saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," if I don't have anything to blog, I'll just blog anyway. :)

So here's a fun one. My husband is a Pro poker player, we've met or seen most of the top pros from TV at tournaments, inlcuding Dave "the devilfish" Ulliot. Even if you don't follow poker and don't know who he is, this is HILARIOUS. (give it a few seconds to get to the funneh)

Enjoy!

Martial Arts

I've been a bad blogger. So much for the schedule I set myself to blog three times a week. *ahem*

Anyway, moving on.

I've recently entered into a new adventure-the martial arts! I've gone to one group class and absolutely LOVED it. I know the owners of the studio, Mrs Gee and Master Gee (of Master Gee's Black Belt Academy) from the gym, and I coached Mrs Gee in a bodybuilding competition, so that made it a little less scary to join. My background in fitness competitions is proving useful, since I already have the flexibility, a good degree of strength, balance and body awareness. I think this is going to be a good fit for me.

I've already learned so much in so short a time, I can't wait to go back for more. Look out, world!!!

Fifth Draft Complete

I did it! I made it through another draft of novel number one.

Now, for the exciting part.

I'm not sure if blogged about this before, but I won a critique by agent Laurie MacLean in the Boom Effect auction. This was an auction set up by author and podcaster Phillipa Ballantine, to raise money for Tee Morris' daughter when her mother died unexpectedly. People donated a ton of items and a lot of money was raised. I donated a 12 Week Workout and Nutrition Program (the winning bidder is currently on the program!) and I was lucky enough to win one of the items Laurie donated.

Laurie McLean is a professional agent from Larsen Pomada- representing both Tee Morris and Philippa Ballantine as well as other great authors. Laurie is going to read my full novel manuscript and give me a 1-2 page high-level critique. How great is that?! I thought it was a unique opportunity (a nearly impossible one, really!) and the money went to a good cause.

I'll be sending Laurie a hard copy of the manuscript this week. Needless to say I'm excited and nervous! What if she says I can't write? (oh dear!) What if she tells me it's all terrible?! (Ack!) I may need therapy.

Wish me luck. ;)

Inspiration for Productivity

Recently Devon Monk was a guest on the website (a great site for urban fantasy and paranormal readers and writers!) I met Devon in person at Orycon in 2009 and I instantly became a fan. She took time to talk to me, the newbie writer and was not only extremely friendly, but also very helpful. (plus she's a fellow needle-crafter, so that raises her status to uber cool in my book!)

Devon is the author of the Allie Beckstrom Series, with four books currently on shelves and another coming out later this year. She has another two books in her steampunk-western-fantasy series set for 2011 and 2012 releases. With such a high rate of output (6 months per book) I was really curious about her writing and editing schedule. This is something my writing friends and I often have trouble with, the discipline of getting things done. Devon’s answers were so inspiring, I asked her if I could share her words of wisdom through my blog and she graciously gave me permission.

Here’s what Devon had to say about her writing schedule:

“My writing schedule is structured by deadlines. Right now I have a book due on June 1st. That means 4k word day, six days a week, minimum. I write in the morning, take a break for lunch, write until dinner, break. Some of that time goes to online stuff, or emails. But if I don’t have my word count done for the day, I write until midnight (I get up at 6:00 a.m.)”

When it comes to editing, Devon had this to say:

“Edits are also dictated by deadline. I usually have 4 weeks to turn in a revised book, so I break my 100K book into daily goals and try to do more than I think I should (just in case a day gets eaten by “real life”) During this, I am still on deadline to get my min. word count for writing the current book done.”

As if that wasn’t inspiring and helpful enough, she also summed up with this:

“At three books a year, it’s possible for me to write 2,000 words a day and hit all my goals, but there are days when “real life” (sickness, disaster, etc.) steals my time, and then the daily word count must change to make up for it.

Short answer–word goals work better than page goals for me, except in edits, when it’s hard to track words, and page goals make more sense.

Thanks to Devon for taking the time to answer my questions and for motivating me to get my butt in gear!

Now that we've all been inspired, everyone, get to work! And then go buy Devon's books. ;)

Halfway

Just checking in with a progress report. I'm just over halfway through editing novel number one. (*insert clapping here*)

I'm quite proud of myself, since I started off loathing editing this novel for a fifth time, but my productivity went from 12 pages a day to 25 pages a day and I'm actually a teensy weensy bit enjoying it. (don't quote me on that)

I've been taking novel number two to my Writing Workshop and it's getting really great feedback. Which is nice, because when I'm done with novel number one edits, I'll be straight into editing novel number two. (yay, more editing)

I hope everyone's doing well and creating wonderful, awe-inspiring, titillating writing. HA! Okay, if you're writing anything at all, that's perfect in my books. ;)

Writing Retreat

Want to have five days just to be a writer? To escape real life in a gorgeous setting with other writers?

I've signed up for the Rainforest Writers Village Writers retreat for their second session in March, 2011. Their first session sold out in ONE DAY so a second session was added for March 9-13th, 2011. I took advantage of the second session and signed up already.

It's held at the Rain Forest Resort Village on Lake Quinault at the southern entrance of Olympic National Park on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. They have Lakeview Fireplace Cabins (I already booked!), Parkside suites, Village Inn Rooms or RV Park.

So this is just an FYI for anyone who might be interested! Several of my writing friends have also signed up and there are still spots available if you want to join us!!

Check out all retreat info here.
